Hebrews 9:11-15

MEDIATOR OF A NEW COVENANT
For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant…. Hebrews 9:15, NIV

The Bible is divided into two major parts – Old and New Testaments. There is no way we can have the full understanding of the acts of God in the Old Testament without having the New Testament explanation of it. It is in the New Testament that God's plans for humanity are revealed.

However, it should be noted that the potency of a covenant depends on the strength of the seal of the covenant.
This is what the writer of Hebrews is communicating to us today. In the Old Testament, it was the blood of animal God used to seal His covenant relationship with His people.  Whereas, in the New Testament, He used the blood of Jesus, His Son.

With this, Jesus remains the eternal Mediator of the New Covenant.
This means that we can now come boldly to the throne of grace in prayer. As long as we keep our own part of the covenant tenaciously, God remains faithful to His own.

Jeremiah 30:1-3, 18-22

THE DAYS ARE SURELY COMING

I will restore the fortunes of Jacob's tents and have compassion on his dwellings. Jeremiah 30:18, NIV

Jeremiah's prophecy included
(a) deliverance of the Jews from Babylon;
(b) the restoration and happy state of Israel and Judah, when converted to Christ their King;
(c) the miseries of the nations before the coming of Christ;
(d) all men must honour and worship the Son as they honour and worship the Father.

Just as the promise of restoration came to the Israelites in the days of Jeremiah, God is extending the same hope of restoration to you today.

Our gracious Lord pardons the sins of believers, and breaks off the yoke of sin and Satan. He does this that they may serve God without fear, in righteousness and true holiness before Him all the days of their lives, as the redeemed of the Lord.

Your own day of restoration is today. You have dwelt too long on that mountain of despair and despondency. God is determined to bring you into your desired haven. This shall be so, in Jesus' name.

HEAR THE WORDS OF THIS COVENANT

…Cursed is the man who does not obey the terms of this covenant…. Jeremiah 11:3, NIV

A friend of mine once told me that he and his girlfriend made a "blood covenant". This they did by cutting each other's finger tip and taking turn to suck each other's blood.
Thereafter, they had sexual intercourse and promised never to have sexual relationship with any other person till they die.

But my friend broke the covenant and paid the price. He died mysteriously. The penalty for breaking any covenant is always grievous, and it could have effect on generations yet unborn.

All God's promises and blessings are premised on covenant agreement. He wants us to demonstrate full obedience to His laws before we can enjoy the blessings of His kingdom.

In today's passage, God, through prophet Jeremiah, promised to take the Israelites to a land flowing with milk and honey if they obeyed and did everything He had commanded.

However, the Israelites broke God's laws several times and they paid dearly for it. What is your attitude toward God's instructions? The truth is, you can only get the best from God when you are obedient to His Word (Isaiah 1:19).

1 Corinthians 13:1-7

GIVING IN LOVE
If I give all I possess to the poor… but have not love, I gain nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:3, NIV

The hallmark of Christianity is love. Our salvation is a product of love; it was out of His love that God gave us His only Son (John 3:16). In fact, the Bible says that God is love (1 John 4:8).

So, whatever we do that is not borne out of love is not of Him. It has no eternal value. This was the emphasis of Paul's letter to the Corinthian believers. He told them categorically that if they did not have love, nothing else mattered. The truth is, there is no sense in giving when it is not motivated by love.

Love is a commitment to act in a certain way towards others. If you love, then you will give selflessly, sacrificially, without grudge and without expecting any appreciation. These are the kinds of giving acceptable before God.

Beloved, think about all the help you have rendered to people, what motivated you? Even your gifts to the church and brethren, what is motivating you? If it is not love, then you have been merely engaging in religious exercises.

It is expedient for you to begin to give in love. Remember, God can never forget your labour of love. In due time, He will repay you bountifully, both now and in eternity.

TREASURE IN HEAVEN

…Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven…. Mark 10:21, NIV

The beauty of our lives as Christians is in how many lives we touch for God while we live. A Christian's blessings are useless when they are not extended to others, especially the poor.

Giving to the poor is one way by which we lay up treasures for ourselves in heaven (Matthew 6:20). This is one act that defines Christianity.

The man in today's text had fulfilled all the commandments from his youth, except the aspect of generosity. His wealth and possessions had a hold on him such that he could forego the kingdom for them. He had treasures on earth, but none in heaven. What a fool!

A fool is someone who lives for him/herself alone. Such a person has no hope of eternity; he/she is an accident about to happen. God does not want you to be a fool. He created you to be wise. He would want you to replicate that wisdom in your decisions. He desires that you reign with Him in His kingdom.

Thus, whatever God has blessed you with (your gifts, time, intelligence, position, money, material things etc.) are meant to bless others, especially the poor and needy.

Do you want to have treasures in heaven? Do you want to be reckoned with in eternity? Then, learn to give to the poor. No matter how small, always consider it a privilege and make it a point of duty to be a blessing to someone today. You will not miss your reward.

DEVOTED TO GOOD WORKS

This is a faithful saying… that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. Titus 3:8, KJV

When we are devoted to good works in Christ Jesus, it has multiple effects and dividends. It is beneficiary to the doer of the good works. It is also a blessing to the recipient of the good works.

God also commends us. Devotion to good work is profitable but before one can make profit in a business enterprise, the state and the disposition of the entrepreneur to his/her business counts.
Apostle Paul reminds us of this significance of good works if we avoid:
(i) foolish questions
(ii) foolish genealogies
(iii) contentions
(iv) striving about the law (v. 9)
(v) rejection of a heretic after the first and second admonition. There is a saying that "evil communication corrupts good manners."

My father once told me that if you are helping a person that is sinking in a deep sea and he/she appears to be pulling you to the depth of the water, the best option is to let go of him/her so that you do not perish along with him/her.

God demands your devotion and commitment to good works. Watch out for warning signs that can contaminate or hinder you from such and it shall be well with your soul.

James 4: 11-17

DOING THE RIGHT THING

Therefore to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not to him it is sin James 4:17, NIV

Life always presents to us the options of good and evil. We have the opportunity to either speak evil or good of our colleagues.

If we decide to speak evil of anyone, by implication, we pronounce judgments on such individual (v. 11). God has not called us to pronounce judgment on others. He never made us judges. He is the Judge and Lawgiver (v. 12).

Today's text affirms that the good you know how to do but you decided not to do will be counted against. Look around. What are those things that God has been calling your attention to but you have ignored His promptings?

Those little acts of kindness that you have refused to do can pit you against God. We are also admonished to be careful of boasting about the future as if it is already ours. Jesus owns our tomorrow. We must ascribe all the glory to Him by acknowledging that He is supreme over our being.

It is a privilege to be alive and we must not take that for granted. All honour and adoration must be unto God.

Today, be conscious of the fact that God owns your life and future. Give Him the credit. This is the route to doing good as against evil.

GOD'S FAITHFULNESS IN OUR TEST

…God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear…1 Corinthians 10:13, NIV

Life's journey is full of valley and mountain experiences. These, sometimes, paint God as unjust or unfaithful. However, it does not dispute the fact that God is a loving and caring Father.

God allows certain things to happen in our journey in life to see how faithful we are to Him; to check our stability and dependency on Him.

The Israelites failed to acknowledge the faithfulness of God in their distress and His acts of deliverance, provisions, miracles, even in the wilderness. They thus frustrated His grace and election over them and were destroyed by fiery serpents (Exodus 17:1-7; Numbers 20:1-13, 21:4-8).

Apostle Paul wants you to consider the mistakes of this people and learn from them. Do not provoke God because of what you are passing through.

Do not look at your problem but focus on God who has the authority to solve all problems in your life. Stay by His word in any circumstance of life for He has promised to deliver His people from their afflictions. He shall see you out of that tempting and frustrating experience. Just trust and take Him by His word and sincerely commit your life to His care.

IN PUTTING THE LORD TO THE TEST
And great fear came upon all the church and upon as many as heard these things. Acts 5:11, KJV

Sapphira conspired with Ananias her husband to lie to the Holy Spirit. They sold a possession but instead of releasing the whole sum of money as they promised and proclaimed, they released part of it for the work of the Lord. They thought nobody would find out about the lie. They forgot that God, the Head of the Church is all-seeing and all-knowing.

We need to learn not to collaborate to do evil and also, that truth must be told exactly the way it is. We must also note that God sees and He judges. There are always blessings attached to obedience as there is also punishment for disobedience.

The couple (Ananias and Sapphira) became examples for us in our days. When people learn from us, it is better that they learn positive things so that we can become good reference point. Sapphira and her husband were not. As a result of their sin, fear fell upon the congregation.

Be determined to co-operate with God in truth, holiness and soberness of mind. This is the way to joy, prosperity and life. Death is far away from anyone who tells the truth. Be determined to tell the truth today and always.

TURNING AWAY FROM FOLLOWING
For they will turn your sons away from following me to serve other gods…. Deuteronomy 7:4, NIV

The devotion today is a clear warning to every pilgrim of the Kingdom of God. God, through Moses, warned the Israelites on how to live when they get to the Promised Land. God made it clearly known to them that they were going to possess the Promised Land.

However, He strictly warned them to be careful of the kind of life they would live in the land. The reason is, God knew that they could easily be derailed by the things in the land.

In the contemporary time, God has promised us abundant life as Christians living in the world. However, we must carefully consider His warnings to us not to "be yoked together with unbelievers… (2 Corinthians 6:14). Anybody who is unequally yoked together with the world will surely be a victim of God's anger, which leads to destruction (v. 4).

Friends, how long would you turn away from following the Lord? Jesus loves you; He does not want your destruction. Would you turn to Him today so that you may have abundant life? He is waiting with an outstretched arm to receive you.

ACCOUNTABLE TO GOD
So then, each of us will give account of himself to God. Romans 14:12, NIV

Recently, I met an alcoholic driver who incidentally claimed to be a Christian. I accepted the challenge to counsel him that alcohol was not good for his health. To my surprise, the man told me that the worst that could happen to him is death. I was careful not to condemn him, but I asked if he realised that he would give account of how he used his life when he returns to his Maker.

Apostle Paul, in today's devotion, tells us that we are stewards of how we live on a daily basis. One of the definitions of a steward is, "a person employed to manage a large house or estate." How are you living your life daily? Do you know you will give account of your life?

Perhaps you are thinking that your body belongs to you, and you can use it as you wish. What a wrong assumption! You inscribe tattoos on your skin, and do all manner of things with your body in the name of 'big boy' or 'big girl.'
Do not be deceived; your body does not belong to you. You are just a steward, and soon, you will account to your Maker.

The counsel to you this day is to repent from your ungodly ways and return to God. Begin to live your life with heaven in view. May you not regret it at the end in Jesus' name.

HONOURING AND GIVING THANKS TO GOD
…He who eats meat eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. Romans 14:6, NIV

God's Spirit, through Apostle Paul, gave us the best approach to handling disputable matters in the body of Christ today. The first approach is to thank and appreciate God for the privilege we have to know Him as much as we do.

He also wants us to honour Him in the lives of other Christians by accepting them as they are as we make efforts to help them become better Christians. Again, Apostle Paul warned the Roman Christians, as God is warning you and I today, to desist from "passing judgment on disputable matters" (v. 1), but to accommodate other Christians whose faith in Christ may not be as strong as ours.

Friend, do not condemn any more, but like Jesus did; teach, rebuke, correct and train others in righteousness (John 8:1-11; 2 Timothy 3:16). Stop castigating other Christians on disputable matters because you may not necessarily have superior spiritual knowledge and understanding on the matter.

Always remember that, "the man who eats everything must not look down on him who does not, and the man who does not eat everything must not condemn the man who does, for God has accepted him" (Romans 14:3).

GLORIFYING GOD IN YOUR BODY

For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body…. 1 Corinthians 6:20, KJV

The human body is mortal and it would surely suffer corruption after death. We are custodians of our body and have responsibility to cater for, and nourish it for a healthy living. We cannot separate the body and the spirit for there is a strong interplay between them. It is not possible to dedicate your spirit to God and handle your body the way you like. God requires that we glorify His name both in the spirit and in the body. The body has been described as the temple of the Holy Spirit and as such must be kept holy (1 Corinthians 6:19).

There is a foundational reason that should motivate every believer to live a distinguished life since Christ bought us with His precious and sinless blood. To glorify God in your body, you must yield your body and all her members; your soul and all its faculties, as instruments of righteousness to God. God's call is for us to devote and employ all we have to Him as a sacrifice to His glory. Examine your life today and make adjustments where necessary on the use of your body. Are you yielding your body as an instrument for sin or as an instrument of righteousness? Reconcile with God and henceforth, glorify God in your body.

WASHED, SANCTIFIED, AND JUSTIFIED
...But you were washed… sanctified…justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.  1 Corinthians 6:1-11, KJV

Paul rebuked the Corinthian believers because of some sinful acts that were prevalent among them. He criticised them of taking fellow believers to law court and advocated that believers should rather endure being cheated and wronged (vs. 1, 5, 7).

Paul considered lawsuits against fellow believers a reproach because   unbelievers are the ones that would preside over these lawsuits in the court. He then reminded the church about their exalted positions and the acts of God upon them.

As believers, we enjoy certain privileges that qualify and give us right standing before God. We are to put off all filthiness of the spirit and flesh because God has washed and sanctified us. The church is a separated community called out of the world and united with God.

Our justification therefore implies that Jesus Christ has blotted out our sins and the Spirit of God is witnessing the same to our conscience. We should live in the consciousness that these acts of God are intended to qualify us for the Kingdom promised by Christ.

Are you aware of these actions? If yes, pattern your life in line with the Word of God. As long as we remain in the flesh, the rule of sin will remain a challenge but the grace of God is sufficient for us.

DISSOCIATING FROM IMMORALITY IN THE BODY
But now I have written unto you not to keep company with anyone...not even to eat with such a person.  1 Corinthians 5:11, KJV

Apostle Paul gave a godly counsel about immorality that wanted to destroy the testimony of the church at Corinth. He was conscious of the need for the church to promote the standard of holiness because of where it was situated.

Initially from chapter 5, he spoke specifically about the incestuous brother in the church but in verse 9, Paul spoke generally and encouraged the righteous in the church to show hatred for sin in a more practical way.

The only way was for them to dissociate from a professing Christian who continues with immoral acts; and has a scandalous character. This is to show to the world that the church does not tolerate sin.

He further warned them to desist from eating sacred meals that could promote their association with the world. These instructions are relevant to us today. When you associate with someone with a scandalous character, you portray that you are both of the same nature.

The time has come for you to check your life and that of those you associate with. Prayerfully decide today to have a change of attitude and identify with godly people in order to witness to others.

AGREEMENT WITHOUT DIVISIONS
...That you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you.... 1 Corinthians 1:10, KJV

Today's devotion is a call to harmony within the body of Christ and an emphasis on the need to do away with all that can bring discord. God has positioned specific individuals within the church to serve as agents through whom His blessings are communicated to His people.

Many times, our human natures are demonstrated when we show loyalty to one of these and relegate the other. We take sides with the vessels God uses and overlook the Source of the grace itself.

While God is not against our giving appropriate honour to credible leaders, we must be careful not to allow dividing spirit gain a foothold in God's assembly. When the unity of the church is tampered with, the free move of God may not be guaranteed.

Paul rebuked attitudes like this among the Corinthians. This is reflecting among us today. Christ must be exalted and rated over and above all in the church so that the glory would be His alone.

Have you observed any kind of division in your place of worship? Release yourself today as an instrument to bring the desired peace into the body of Christ.

MANY MEMBERS IN ONE BODY
For as the body is one and has many members... 1 Corinthians 12:12-20

Paul, in this writing to the Corinthians employed the unity of the operations of the body to establish a spiritual reality about the interdependent nature of the church of God. Though there are many members but the body remains one. This is the reality of our faith in Christ.

Though different in personality, but we are saved by the same grace. Like the human body, although they are many, yet they all unite in one harmonious whole.

The unity of the body of Christ is best portrayed as many members having similar pursuits in favour of the kingdom of God. As such, no distraction must be allowed to divert the view of the church from her commission in spite of the obvious difference.

From today's inspiration, it is advised that each believer take the stand of a crusader for the unity of the body in pursuits and purpose. From this, we would get the desired result to change the world for Christ.

Begin to pray to love the unlovable today. Also, you must follow up your prayers with actions. Give gifts to the unlovable; visit them and fellowship with them in truth. As you do so, you would ignite the fire of unity once again.

...Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:2-3, NIV

We have the responsibility of maintaining the Spirit's unity. The unity of the Godhead is proven above any doubt in the Scriptures. The desire of Christ is for the Church to demonstrate this unity in her relationship as a testimony to the world that the Father sent Christ (John 17:21).

When Paul admonished the Ephesian Christians to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace, he was emphasising the need for them all to be in perfect agreement; a kind of agreement that is bonded by the Spirit.
There is no doubt that the Church at Ephesus was composed of converted Jews and Gentiles. Because of their different backgrounds, there might be frequent causes of frictions. Indeed, the Jews, though converted, might be envious that the Gentiles were to share the same privileges with them, without sharing in the yoke and burden of the Mosaic Law. Churches today harbour great sentiments towards one another.

We must unite to restore the move of the Spirit in our midst. Let the miracle begin from you. Put aside all differences and allow the bond of peace through the Spirit.

EMPOWERED BY THE SAME SPIRIT
All these are the works of one and same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.  1 Corinthians 12:11, NIV

The Scriptures affirms that the Spirit of God is one. The fact that the church shares spiritual things in common is supposed to guarantee our collective unity in spite of the obvious differences.

There are many people in the church demonstrating different gifts according to the will of the Spirit. Interestingly, no matter how public or private any of the gifts may be, each of them is powered by the same Spirit.

The church as a centre approved by God should be a place where His power is experienced by all who approach Him. All spiritual gifts are powered by the Holy Spirit to extend the testimony of the church about God and the promised kingdom.

For an effective ministry, you must daily rely on the Spirit to instruct and guide you so that the results would bring glory to God's name. Pray for the renewal of your gift(s) and Spirit today.

THE CONFESSION OF OUR HOPE
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. Hebrews 10:23, NIV

The truth of the Gospel is the acknowledgement of Jesus Christ as the only Saviour. Any confession other than this is an aberration. The hope professed by the Christians of old was the resurrection of the body and everlasting life. These people looked forward to a future with God and this influenced their living.

For hope to be hope, it must be kept alive by a believing heart. You have a duty to protect your confession of hope until it materialises in physical terms, delivering the dividends to you.

Hope disappears when there is no fertile ground for it to blossom. Hope must be nourished daily in prayers and reaffirmations. You are what you confess and your life is driven mostly by the confessions you make.

This is why what you hope for must reflect in your speech and life in general before they become actualised. Keep on confessing it and pray through till the desire translates to testimony.

IN HOPE WE WERE SAVED

For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is not hope at all. Romans 8:24, NIV

Paul literally undermined the effects of the suffering he underwent as an apostle of Christ Jesus when compared with the glory ahead (vv. 18). He viewed the "sons of God" as the needed response to the groaning of the entire creation and challenged them to manifest the glory of God in them (vs. 19-21).

The demonstration of hope in the face of harsh and unpleasing conditions is our way of making practical the reality of our faith. It is also a means God uses to grow His children.

When we overlook the odds and embrace the glory, it is faith made practical. No one has a grip of what he/she hopes for, if we do, it is no more hope; but the Scriptures affirms salvation in and through hope (v. 24).The hope of reference from the text is the redemption of the soul. The delay in accomplishing the goals may be horrifying. The Word of God for you today is that there is hope.

Embrace faith, and make your claim on the strength available through the Spirit. It would be your turn to sing soon.

HOPE IN GOD'S STEADFAST LOVE

We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. Psalm 33:20, NIV
Objectively speaking, there are enough things in this world to distract believers from the God of their salvation. When our lives are buffeted by the odds around, all we seek is solution.

From today's text, the symbol of the multitude of army for the king; strength for the mighty man and horse for safety are references to seeming solutions to the challenges we face and the things from which we seek rescue (vv. 16-17). It is, however, unfortunate that these are not sufficient in themselves to bring solution to our unending challenges.

This is why the psalmist suggests a total reliance on God for lasting solutions to the issues of life (v. 20). For those who fear and hope in His mercies, He would bring salvation to them, no matter the nature of their problems.

Are you troubled? Renew your hope and love in God today. Expect your breakthrough in ways beyond your imagination. Always bear this in mind: God's steadfast love over you cannot cease, come what may.

YOU HAVE BEEN BORN ANEW
You have been born again...through the living and enduring word of God. 1 Peter 1:23, NIV

Every privilege comes with responsibility. God does not breed irresponsible children. Therefore, when God adopts you as His child, He gives you certain responsibilities so that you can live well and contribute meaningfully to the body of Christ.

The reason you must live well is because you have been born anew. You cannot take it for granted; a life was actually given for your life. God first paid the great price of love for you. He sent His only begotten Son to teach you how to live and to die in your place.

Obedience to Him should be the least you could do to show your gratitude to Him. Therefore, you need to live with the consciousness that you have now been born anew. You can no longer live as of the old time.

Add to yourself virtues that portray you as a new creature - genuine love for the brethren (v. 22) and deep hunger for the Word of God (v. 22, I Peter 2:2) as you determine to drop those things that can slow you down - malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy and slander (1 Peter 2:1).

Believers have been called by God to a holy living. God redeemed us through the precious blood of His only begotten Son and then calls us to live holy lives in order to please Him.

For us to maintain our sanctification and holy living, we must be clear thinkers (1 Peter 1:13, NLT). We must also know that God has no favourites and He does what He says He would do (v. 17).

As God's children, our hope is not here on earth alone. We have a better hope and home in view – heaven and holiness is a prerequisite to getting there. The way the Bible talks about holiness gives a clear indication that God would not compromise it for anything.

Beloved, have you ever thought about the nature of your call? It is a call to holy living. It is a call that leaves you with no option. If you have not been true to it before, repent before the Lord today and start a new life.

The Lord will establish you as His holy people...if you ...walk in His ways. Deuteronomy 28:9, NIV.

Sometimes, we promise to do some things for people on the basis that they would give something in return. Usually, the one making the promise is more endowed than the one being promised. Such is the case in our passage today.

God makes so many promises and He is capable of fulfilling them but it is as we fulfil our part of the bargain. Undoubtedly, God will keep to His promises. It is humans who usually fail on their parts.
God our Father expects that we fully obey Him in all things and be careful in doing all that He has asked us to do (v. 1).

We must not be careless or uncaring about the things of God. Obedience to God is not just doing things because you have been told to do it. Rather, it is doing it heartily because you love and serve the Lord (Colossians 3:23-24).

You can be established as God's child today if you will determine to obey Him at all times.

A HIGHWAY CALLED HOLINESS
And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness. Isaiah 35:8, NIV

Have you ever lost things that were very precious to you? How did you feel? Did you ever think that such things were irreplaceable? How did you cope without those things?

Many times, when we lose precious items, we often wonder how we would cope, but God has a way of comforting us or restoring to us what we have lost.

We are called to encourage one another not to lose hope (vv. 3-4) because our God is coming to help and save us. Even when it seems that all is lost, we will experience the glory of God (v. 2). Love, joy, hope, possession, and so on that have been taken away will be restored by the Lord.

This promise of restoration, however, is for the people of the Lord; those who have surrendered their totality unto Him and have decided to walk with Him in Holiness. Unfortunately, only a few take time to listen to messages on holiness nowadays.

But if you must enjoy God's full measure of blessings, you must be among the people on the highway of holiness. Are you in the number?

OBEYING THE VOICE OF GOD
...and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God.... Haggai 1:12, NIV

God has a word of assurance for someone today; assurance of His presence in the task He committed into your hands. He told the people that He was with them and therefore, they needed to be strong (Haggai 1:13; 2:4). He also promised them His power, glory and provision (Haggai 2:7-8).

Has God given you any responsibility? He is well able to see you through it. Note also that God spoke and His people heard Him and they responded. The people obeyed because they recognised the source of the message.

When you hear God through any of His servants, how do you respond? True hearing does not stop at just hearing. True hearing leads to obedience. In fact, if you have not obeyed Him, you have not heard Him. You will also notice the promptness at which the people in the passage obeyed God. So, let your obedience also be prompt to His Word anytime it comes your way.

TAKE COURAGE
...be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Psalm 27:14, NIV

Sometimes, we are so overwhelmed by situations that we turn to different persons for solution. The psalmist in today's passage encourages us all to turn to God.
David's confidence in the Lord was so strong that he knew that even when forsaken by his parents, he would not be forsaken by God.

How did he know this? He had seen God deliver him from the fang of lions when he was alone in the bush, shepherding. Again, the Lord delivered him from various attacks on his life. So, he was simply counting on God's faithfulness in the past, and that gave him peace in his present situation.

For the psalmist, no matter what he faced, he had the assurance that God's goodness would not fail. You also need to have this kind of confidence. You need to follow the Lord's instruction to you through David. He says, "Wait on the Lord... take courage...because He will surely do you well".

There is no comfort or solution elsewhere but in the Lord. Hold on to Him, He can never fail. Therefore, take courage, His help is on the way.

THE FEAR OF THE LORD
Be sure to keep the commands of the Lord your God and the stipulations and decrees He has given you. Deuteronomy 6:17, NIV

For God's promises to come to fulfilment in our lives, there is a part that we must play. The Word of God enjoins us to, "Do what is right and good in the Lord's sight, so that..."
When we do what is right, we are bound to have joy and we will enter into the fulfilment of God's promises for our lives.
It is not enough for us to fear the Lord, God expects us to also teach our children, neighbours, classmates, etc. to fear Him (vv. 20-24).

The fear of the Lord must be passed on from generation to generation so that a generation which does not know the Lord will not arise from us. The situation we are witnessing in the world today is a proof that we are not doing well in this matter. Can God testify of you the way He testified personally of Job (Job 1:8)?

THE CONSEQUENCES OF DISOBEDIENCE
...if you reject my decrees...I will bring upon you sudden terror... Leviticus 26:15-16, NIV

As we learnt yesterday, there is always a consequence for disobedience. Sometimes, the excuses we give for not obeying might seem tenable to us, but the truth is: God does not lower His standard for anyone. Just as there are benefits for obedience, punishments await anyone who disobeys.

Today's passage highlights some of these consequences. God categorically states that whoever chooses not to obey will experience sudden terror, terrible diseases, famine and denial of access into His presence. Like David said, it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. It is better to be on the Lord's side than to face Him from the other side.

Search your heart and commit your life to God afresh today. Ask Him for the grace to always obey Him. Nobody can cope with the sudden terror that comes from disobedience to God.

THE BLESSINGS OF OBEDIENCE
If you...are careful to obey my commands, I will send you rain... Leviticus 26:3-4, NIV

Life is governed by laws and principles. And these laws often come with conditions, which when flouted could have grave consequences. God gave the children of Israel several laws to guide their conducts and ensure their wellbeing.

He spelt out the condition attached to the obedience of these laws as well as the consequences of doing otherwise. God has also given us laws to live by as He gave to the Israelites. How are you faring with God's laws as found in the Bible? What about the laws of your country otherwise called 'Civil Laws'?

Do you find it difficult obeying the set rules of your institution/organisation? Do you find yourself perpetually disobeying constituted authorities? God does not take disobedience to His laws lightly and He also attaches "fringe benefits" to the obedience of these laws. Law breakers do not have any portion with God.

Therefore, surrender your life to Jesus today; ask Him for the grace to obey Him; ask Him to change your mindset from one that rebels to that which humbly sees an opportunity to obey God at all times. As you do so, you make God happy and you will surely enjoy the blessings that follow.

MY SPIRIT SEEKS YOU
My soul yearns for you...my spirit within me earnestly seeks you. Isaiah 26:9, NRSV

We humans are made up of body, soul and spirit. As our body and soul long for attention, so also our spirit. God has designed our spirit in a way that it seeks to worship something or pay allegiance to a supernatural being.

This explains why some had to create objects of worship that they bow down to. For us as Christians, the only One who is worthy of our allegiance and worship is our Creator, God. Seeking the Lord gives us a kind of peace that surpasses human understanding.

Our desire to seek the Lord alone guarantees protection because the Lord is the everlasting rock (v. 4) and our elevation (v. 5). His words are our guide (vv. 7-8).

There is no substitute to seeking God. Your fulfilment in life depends solely on how much of Him you have. So, if you will sincerely seek the Lord, you will find Him. Decide to seek Him and obey only His commandments always.

CARRIED AWAY INTO CAPTIVITY

Judah had been under serious attacks from different nations including Egypt as a result of the wickedness and abominable things which Manasseh King of Judah did (2 Kings 21:10-16; 2 Kings 23:26). The situation was so terrible for years that God determined to wipe them off; not even the good reign of Josiah could appease Him.

Thus, Jerusalem was eventually besieged by Nebuchadnezzar and his forces. The families of the king, nobles, skilled and strong men were all taken to exile in Babylon. Daniel and his friends were among this set of captives. This is what the sin of a few can cause others.

Wickedness and disobedience provoke God to act in judgement. It is the reason why some persons have ruined their destinies. Come what may, you must learn to follow the path of righteousness and obedience to God so that you can enjoy His blessings.

GIVEN INTO THE ENEMY'S HANDS
And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon .... 2 Chronicles 36:20, KJV
One of the worst things that can happen to any person is to find him/herself at the mercy of his/her enemy. In today's text, it was God Himself who handed Israel over to their enemies to be tormented.

Verses 15 and 16 tell us that God sent His messengers to warn them but they mocked them and despised God's Words. This kindled the wrath of God and God raised an enemy in person of Nebuchadnezzar who came and took them into exile and vandalised the city of Jerusalem.

We should be careful how we live. Failure to do so can bring trouble upon us. Disobedience to God is the opportunity the enemy uses to get an in-road into our lives. The reason some Christians have become mince-meat in the devil's hand is disobedience. As a result, they seek serious deliverance.

Beloved, the devil will always lurk around for disobedient children of God because he knows that such do not have the protection of God. So beware!

THE FALL OF JERUSALEM
Then the city was broken up and all the men of war fled ... Jeremiah 52:7, KJV

The fall of Jerusalem was a fulfilment of prophecy. This happened when the people who are supposed to be holy sinned against God. Zedekiah provides us an example. Verses 2-3 tell us that "He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, just as Jehoiakim had done.

It was because of the LORD's anger that all this happened to Jerusalem and Judah, and in the end, He thrust them from His presence ...."

It is important to note that God responds to our attitude - when we do right, He rewards us with good; and when we do evil, and refuse to repent, He punishes us. In most cases, we are responsible for whatever happens to us.

It should be noted that Jerusalem fell at the time of Zedekiah not just because there was a prophecy in place for this to happen, but because Zedekiah sinned against God.

The lesson is, when we turn to God and do what is right before Him, He will also turn the evil away from us, and reward us with His goodness.

SIN AGAINST A NEIGHBOUR AND GOD
...Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel .... 1 Kings 8:34, KJV

King Solomon addressed two issues in His prayer. The first was establishing who is guilty and who is innocent when two persons (or neighbours) are in disagreement, by coming to swear an oath before the altar in the temple. The other has to do with God forgiving any sinner who truly asks for His forgiveness.

It is important for us as children of God to be quick at acknowledging our faults and sin whether against our neighbours or God, rather than looking for ways to cover them and thus attract God's wrath. Proverbs 28: 13 says, "He who covers his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them, finds mercy."

It is of no use attempting to shy away from your sins, rather, confess immediately and forsake them so that the "time of refreshing may come from the presence of our God". Also, ask those whom you have offended to forgive you. Do not wait until it is too late.

RELATING TO YOUR NEIGHBOUR
… Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour... Leviticus 19: 13, KJV

We need to be reminded that our neighbours are those with whom we relate or meet from time to time. Technology, to a large extent, has changed our perception on the definition of a neighbour.

In today's passage, God, speaking through His servant Moses, gives us some golden rules to apply when relating with our neighbours - we should not steal or defraud our neighbours, we should also be fair to them. In verse 14, God notes the fact that some of the people we meet on daily basis could be physically challenged, hence He warns us against abusing them or taking undue advantage of them by misleading them.

Also, God does not want us to spread rumours among ourselves, neither does He want us to hate one another. Instead, we should express God's love among ourselves and correct those who wrong us in love. If there is any misunderstanding between you and your classmate, neighbour etc., settle it today.

Encourage your parents to stop keeping malice with your neighbour(s) if you notice anything like that. Love that physically challenged fellow in your church if there is any.

KEEPING GOD'S COMMANDMENT ALWAYS
Love the LORD your God and keep his requirements, his decrees, his laws and his commands always. Deuteronomy 11: 1, NIV

If you made the wise choice yesterday, then you know that the only thing required more is for you to be consistent.

Yes, consistency is the word. God wants you to always keep His Words. It is no use beginning something when you know you cannot continue in it. To "continue the word always" implies being consistent both in the secret and in the open. It also implies being consistent both in good and bad times, when it is convenient and not convenient.

Whether you are rich or poor, you must keep God's commandment always. God is counting on you to keep His Word always.
Every investment of God over you is to achieve the purpose of keeping His instructions.

Do you know that it is all for your good? God has nothing to lose if you fail to obey Him. You are the one who is playing game with your life, both here and in eternity. Be wise!

LOVE AND COMMANDMENT KEEPING
Know therefore that the LORD your God is God ... keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations.... Deuteronomy 7:9, NIV

Whatever God asks us to do is for our own good and for His own glory. However, if we refuse to obey Him, He will still be glorified through other means though we will not be blessed. Just as God loved the Israelites, He has chosen us out of His love. His faithfulness never comes to an end. They are always new.

Knowing this, what manner of man or woman should you be?
Simply, God expects you to reciprocate this by loving Him and keeping His commands. God's love should gear you to do His will. He who does not love God cannot keep His commandment.

In "Experiencing God", Henry Blackaby rightly stated that if you have a problem obeying God, you actually have a love problem. The question then is, do you love God? (John 14:15, 21:24). Keeping God's commands without love for Him attracts no blessing.

But carefully obeying His Words because you love Him brings numerous blessings your way. As from today, love God and keep His Words and your blessings will be sure.

WHAT PROCEEDS FROM THE HEART
For out of the heart come evil thoughts... Matthew 15: 19, NIV

In the passage today, Jesus states in clear terms that our actions on a daily basis are products of our mind. The Scripture says, "Carefully guard your thought because they are the source of true life." (Proverbs 4:23, CEV).

You cannot speak or act out something your heart did not receive. The bottom-line is that all things proceed from the heart. Every issue of life emanates from the heart; for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

Therefore, guard your heart; x-ray whatever goes into it through these gateways:
Eye (what you see or read);
Nose (what you smell);
Tongue (what you taste);
Ear (what you hear or listen to); and
Skin (What you touch or feel).

As a child of God, allow the Holy Spirit to mould your heart and make it right. Follow the instructions as recorded in Romans 12:1-2. An evil heart cannot produce good words. Therefore, get your heart right with God so that the proceeds thereof will be good.

BUT I SAY TO YOU

... Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Matthew 5:28, NIV

The Scripture says that in the past God spoke through His prophets, but today He has spoken to us by His Son (Hebrews 1: 1-2).

According to Henry Blackabay, in "Experiencing God," the Lord speaks to us by the Holy Spirit through the Bible, the church and circumstances. Is His Word saying anything to you? God has a word for every situation. But, people do not always hear Him!

Jesus, in today's passage, gave us a better understanding about sexual sin. This is not the same as the Old Testament Law.
Jesus said things that were different from what men had known and practised on the issue of sexual immorality.

Thus, the popular saying that the voice of men is the voice of God (vox populi, vox Dei) is not correct. What will make it correct is if it agrees with what God says. You need to know that it is better to hear God's voice, but the best is to obey Him when He speaks, even if it is different from what you have always known and practised (James 1 :22).

FULFILLING THE LAW

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets,' I have come ... to fulfil them. Matthew 5: 17, NIV

Imagine the joy and relieve that you have when someone volunteers to help you carry a load you cannot carry or something you have been struggling with.

This is exactly what Jesus did for you and even much more. Hear Him, "I have come to fulfil the law." That which you and I could not do, He came to do to give the law full meaning. But this can only be yours by faith in Him. You must appropriate what He did for you.

I remember the story of a woman who with her load was offered ride at the back of a pick-up van. She entered the pick-up van and still put her load on her head. What a life!
It is unfortunate that some have faith in Jesus yet they still feel they will be righteous by what they do or not do.

The truth is, immediately you have faith in Jesus, God declares you righteous. He then empowers you by His Spirit and expects you to live a holy life. It is in this way that your righteousness will surpass that of the Pharisees.

TESTING AND FEAR

... God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning. Exodus 20:20, NIV

We have just read through the second part of the Ten Commandments which deals with our relationship with our fellow human beings.

The first part deals with our relationship with God. Hence, Jesus summarised the commandments by saying that the greatest commandment is to "love the Lord with all your heart, and the second, love your neighbour as yourself" (Matthew 22:36-39).

Loving God has to do with reverencing Him. Our love for God is demonstrated by how much we fear Him.

God is interested in the fact that we fear (reverence) Him and obey His Word. The God who spoke with awe to the Israelites is the same today. Paul said, "Knowing the terror of God we persuade men" (2 Corinthians 5: 11).

The drive for evangelism for the apostles was the fear of God. Do you fear God? Do you hallow His Name and Word? Or, do you take His instructions for granted? Note that God will always test your heart to see if you will fear and obey Him. It is in your own interest to fear God.

I CAME FROM THE FATHER
Yes, I came from the father into the world, and now I will leave the world and return to the father. John 16:28, NLT

Jesus plainly declared to His disciples that He came from the Father. At His ascension, He went back to the Father. As a result, we gain access to the Father through His Son, Jesus. We can ask and receive whatever we desire according to His will.

Once we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, automatically, the love of the Father is planted in us. Our love for Jesus shows we believe He came from the Father.
Jesus knew His Source and was accountable to Him. If we would fulfill God's purpose on earth, we should behave likewise. The One who sent us is waiting for our "report cards".

Bearing this in mind will help us watch our motives, motivations, decisions, actions, reactions and responses in our daily engagements and ministries. The import of the message is this: God is your Source, He is the Source of your resources and unto Him you shall give account of your life and stewardship. Live in this consciousness.

Galatians 6: 1-5

TAKE CARE AGAINST BEING TEMPTED

... And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself Galatians 6:1, NLT

Temptation is inevitable in every man's life and it will continue as we journey in life. Being tempted itself is not a sin but yielding to temptations is sin.

The admonition of Paul in today's text is that it is possible for our fellow Christians to fall into temptation. When this happens, we should help them. However, we must be careful so that we too do not become victims of temptation.

Anyone who thinks he/she is too strong to fall or too big to help fallen ones is engrossed in self-deception (1 Corinthians 10: 12). Perfection in Christian experience is a continuous journey; and it is a journey you cannot make alone. Have you noticed the ants? When one is wounded, others rally round to pick it up. Thus, in our journey of faith, we are called to help each other. Our responsibility is to help the less mature in faith.

May the Lord provide shoulders to lean on when brethren are weak and hands to pick them up when they need lifting! This is the beauty of our faith.

THE COMPLETION OF GOD'S PLAN

But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold. Job 23:10, NIV

God has a plan for all of His children. Most times, He allows us know what He plans to do with our lives but keeps how He will achieve it from us. It should be noted however that God will not rest until His purpose over us is achieved. However, having known Him as a Father, we must learn to rest on Him.

During Job's ordeals, he came to a conclusion that his trouble was an examination or trial by God; and that when God was through, He would bring him forth like gold. If you have searched your heart and have prayed through, you will know if you are not out of His will. Are you suffering any affliction? Note:
(1) You are on trial. (2) Your trial has an end. (3) You shall come out of it gloriously, approved of God.

So, be encouraged. Hear the Word of the Lord: "I know what I am doing. I have it all planned out – plans to take care of you, not abandon you..." (Jeremiah 23:10, MSG).

1 Corinthians 15: 12-20

CHRIST HAS BEEN RAISED

But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. 1 Corinthians 15:20, NIV

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the centre of our Christian faith. Christianity will be a charade if He has not risen. It was as He died and was buried that believers are also dead to sins; but as He rose from the dead, a new life also burst forth when believers give their lives to Christ. And the evidences of His resurrection are there clearly for all to see. It is only those who are blind and doomed in their sins that will not agree that He rose from the dead.

Friend, our hope in Christ is beyond this life. If He was raised from the dead, we shall also rise in the latter day into His glorious rest. No matter what you face now, He who raised Jesus from the dead shall also "quicken your mortal body".

Like Job, let your confession be "Still, I know that God lives – the One who gives me back my life..." Job 19: 25 (MSG).

Psalm 73:16-28

RECEIVED BY GOD WITH HONOUR

You guide me with Your counsel, and afterwards You will take me into glory. Psalm 73:24, NIV

Two strong themes are presented in today's text.
(1) The wicked prosper, leaving faithful people wondering why they bother to be good and
(2) The faithful appear to have been unfortunate because they choose to live faithfully.

Apparently, in our daily experiences, we are always bothered by these issues. But, the Psalmist presents us with a yardstick to measure these conflicting issues. The yardstick is the end. The end will justify the means! The 'final destiny' of the wicked is destruction but for the faithful, God is their 'final destiny'.

The lesson today is that you should never be carried away by the seeming 'prosperity' of the wicked. Rather, let your heart be at peace that you are doing the will of God. Let God guide you in all you do. He knows the right way to a glorious destiny. Do not be deceived to put your hope in momentary material things. Every time you are getting carried away by the progress of the wicked, run into God's presence as the Psalmist did. The glory of God will be your latter end.
